PET OF THE QUARTER By Tamara Hollingsworth
Frankie is a dachound with a personality! He loves and kisses all of us at Star Academy, including most of the other regulars (dogs). He will cuddle up with the older dogs while he is at our "pet daycare center". Sometimes he will go under the pillow-bed and run in circle looking like a little flying saucer. Sooo cute! Just thinking of him makes me want to hug Frankie! His daddy, Jeff is a certified professional fitness trainer. He is strong and very muscular. His business is located next to our building. It is "Two Fit Pros Training". www.twofitpros.com

Bad Economy by Tamara Hollingsworth With the increase of job loss and the cost of living increase, some of you may feel the sting. Some worse than others. If you are one of the ones who are forced to tighten their belt, what can you do to maintain the well-being of your beloved pet(s). 1.) Shorter clips may help in easier care and to eliminate de-matting (removing tangles) fees. For some breed, this may allow longer wait in between grooms, if you keep them combed out. Be sure to at least get the nails and ears cleaned regularly. 4 to 6 weeks is the norm. Otherwise you may end up with a hefty vet bill. 2.) Some customers find that if they have the regular standing appointments, to have the groomer just brush out, bathe and do minor tidy up every other time, and to have their pet get a full groom in between. Or in some cases, to do 2 baths in between grooms. This can help stretch the budget further. 3.) For those who lost their job, we will do trade. For example, if you do lawn & tree trimming service, cleaning service, typing, repairs, etc.. we will trade the hours worked for the hours we work on your pet(s), or if it's a product, value for value... Few will even barter. An older lady may make great jams & jellies. Several groomers will trade grooming for those delicious homemade jam & jellies. Ask! Now if you are one of the fortunate ones who are doing just fine in this economy, and want to know what you can do to help. Make sure your pet(s) are groomed on a regular basis and when you see your neighbors or friends whose pet(s) are in "not so good" condition, helping pay for their grooms and/or vet bills oftentime are greatly appreciated.

"Ask Angel" How do you get the eye stains out? “I used to have brown eye stains until my mom put ‘Angel Eye’ powder in my food.” When the facial hair is wet from excess tearing, it is a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. Not only is it unsightly and may emit an odor, it may be very irritating to your pet. “Angel Eyes” works to prevent tear staining by tying up circulating porphyrins, a compound that reacts with light to produce a reddish brown stain. The ingredients in “Angel Eyes” will prevent your pet from contracting Ptyrosporin (Red Yeast) and bacterial infections. It is wheat & dye free. It is made of 100% pure beef liver, tylosin as tartrate. Feeding this to your pet daily, you will see the results in only 3 to 5 weeks! Other causes may be from clogged tear ducts and oral, eye or ear infections, which must be taken care of by the vet. Allergies may also be the cause. Only use stainless steel or glass bowls to put your pet’s food and water in. Use filtered or distilled water. Also by eliminating pet foods and treats containing food colorings (dyes) or wheat, helps. Some find that feeding more fish and less red meat reduces stains. Sometimes right after washing and drying the face, applying plain lip chap stick under the eye helps repel wetness from excess tearing. Allergies can cause excess tearing. Some people will use white cover-ups you can purchase from the dog shows, to hide the stains. Angel is Star Academy’s mascot. E-mail your question to Angel at: staracademyforpets@yahoo.com

If your pet look shaggy, or smell stinky, or you cannot run a metal comb through your pet's hair like "butter", then it is probably time for your pet to get the "star" treatment!
